Job Title: Controller
Location: Upper Marlboro, MD
Position Type: Full-time, Onsite, Direct Hire
Salary Range: USD $120,000 - $135,000 per year
Position Summary:
The State Group is looking for an experienced Controller to join our Welch and Rushe Division, based in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. This is a fantastic opportunity for an accounting professional with a background in construction or project-based accounting to join a well-established company that has been providing HVAC and plumbing construction services for over 50 years. This role offers excellent career growth and advancement potential within The State Group.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Financial Oversight: Oversee all financial operations for Welch and Rushe, ensuring accurate and timely reporting of financial results.
  • Supervision: Lead and manage the accounting team, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure the team’s efficiency and growth.
  • Accounting Management: Supervise general ledger accounting, accounts payable and receivable, and payroll processing.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Develop and manage the annual budget, and monitor financial performance against forecasts. Collaborate with management to prepare accurate projections and business plans.
  • Project-Based Accounting: Apply your expertise in construction and project-based accounting to ensure proper cost allocation and financial tracking of ongoing projects.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
  • Audit Support: Coordinate and support internal and external audits, ensuring financial statements and records are accurate and transparent.
  • System Optimization: Maintain and improve financial systems, processes, and controls, with a particular focus on enhancing reporting capabilities and ensuring efficiency.
Required Qualifications:
  • Experience:
    • 3+ years of relevant financial experience, including supervisory roles.
    • Experience in construction or project-based accounting preferred.
  • Education: College diploma or bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, etc.).
    • Experience with Sage accounting software or similar financial software systems.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong ability to identify discrepancies, monitor budgets, and ensure financial accuracy.
  • Certifications: CPA (Certified Public Accountant, US) or CPA (Certified Professional Accountant, Canada) preferred.
  • Work Schedule: Availability to work varied hours, particularly during closing and budgeting periods, to meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience managing financial operations for a construction or HVAC-related business.
  • Familiarity with the unique financial challenges and processes of project-based industries.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
